  1. Fairway's online shopping can't come too soon.
  2. Not really. :-(
  3. I'm fascinated by for-profits turning into non-profits and vice versa.
  4. The piece doesn't suggest that startups might really want patents because they are a signal to investors. It's a crap reason, and a good reason to change the system since it only costs startups valuable resources at time when they need them, but it's the reason I've seen in the research.
  5. Word. I knew how to get around the NYT paywall and happily bought a subscription. As the author suggests, I like being treated as an adult.
  6. Via Marcel. Interesting looking book by an early Google Brand/Marketing director.
  7. Mark Shuttleworth is trying to recruit engineering managers to Canonical. I agree that the good engineering managers need not be good engineers. I think solid tech skills do go a long way to helping engineers respect their managers. And that is important.

  15. I believe the number but I think it's not true to say that each C&D letter translates into payment. My general understanding is that these letters are being used as a way of getting ISPs to turn users off, not to extra money directly.
  16. Complicated argument by Eben Moglen on the GPL, competition law, and MySQL.
  17. Nice post mostly about the fact that hosting free network services can be expensive and that self-hosting can be a rather tricky proposition.
  18. Jobs are needed to "to cope with the Windows 7 launch." Sounds about right. ;)
