  1. Interesting macro-economic insight and thesis. Very interesting design of a publication (almost certainly the most beautiful economic text I've ever read). I'll bet complexity is really just a proxy for a bunch of other things, but I doubt the authors would really disagree.
  2. "How could the flow of high-quality music continue despite sharp reductions in firms’ ability to appropriate revenue. The puzzle’s resolution may lie in the observation that technological change has not only reduced effective demand; it has also reduced costs of bringing music to market. The costs of creation, promotion, and distribution have all been revolutionised by new information and communications technologies."
  3. "Here’s a provocative talk by Michael Heller about the problems of private ownership."
  4. Meh. The current isn't broken because it has gone down an enormous amount. In fact, it may have broken because it was so high! BC was heavily influenced by the speculators and investors. I think that a much lower price much more accurately reflects the number of people who believe they are likely to use it.
  5. I missed this story back in June.
  6. We stand with the 99 percent
  7. A bloggy lit review on the economics of FOSS.
  8. "Why not offer legal protections to the ugly, as we do with racial, ethnic and religious minorities, women and handicapped individuals?"
  9. "The model aimed to rationalize several puzzles observed in the industry, such as why Red Hat, a high-quality firm, contributes significantly more to Linux than any other firm and why a market with mandatory sharing can actually produce higher-quality products than a proprietary market."
  10. Buffett: "Tax the rich!"
  11. Word. I knew how to get around the NYT paywall and happily bought a subscription. As the author suggests, I like being treated as an adult.
  12. Great content! Super annoying layout!
  13. Interesting. But speculation that a report may have existed that implied these things seems like pretty week ammution.
  14. An interesting taxonomy of races.
  15. Profile of my advisor in the NYT. Why is it in the arts section? Not quite sure.
  16. Nice oped by Viviana Zelizer about why it's considered so bad to give money as a gift.
  17. Great conversation/debate between Nina Paley and Corey Doctorow. Wow!
  18. Bill Gates on Nathan Myrvold on why Wikipedia is great...
  19. Via Aaron, I'm sure.
  20. Nice post mostly about the fact that hosting free network services can be expensive and that self-hosting can be a rather tricky proposition.
  21. Jobs are needed to "to cope with the Windows 7 launch." Sounds about right. ;)
